DIGESTION – HOW DOES IT TAKE PLACE?
Digestion is one of the most important phenomenons happening inside the body to help consume nutrients and energy from foods. Different parts of the body work together to break up nutrient blocks to absorb them fully into the body as a fuel. So what actually is digestion and how does the whole process work? This process begins as soon as the foods enter our mouth through which saliva comes into action and starts forming juices to break down food chemicals. The group of organs working together to help in digestion include oral cavity, stomach, and intestines. Esophagus is another organ to participate in the process of digestion acting like a stretchy pipe helping food to move down to the stomach. Digestion is actually a part of many other processes going on during the digestive system. six major functions taking place during digestion system working are ingestion, secretion, mixing, digestion, absorption and excretion.
Process Involved In Digestive System
Digestive system takes into account multiple processes to convert food into energy. Ingestion, secretion, mixing, digestion, absorption and excretion of wastes are the main parts of the whole digestion process.
The first step in the digestive system is the ingestion process in which food enters the mouth and further steps are started right after it. The mouth begins the journey for digestive system to come into action. This oral cavity starts the process through glands by producing saliva to moisten the tongue and aid food pieces to be broken into small pieces and move down the tract. Teeth help in breaking food pieces to grind into smaller pieces to be moved down easily. Moreover, the tongue helps move pieces in the mouth with help of the muscles to detect different tastes. It grips food pieces to move and be swallowed inside. Moving inside the oral cavity, ingestion part takes place which also allows food intake more than what can be processed at a time.
The throat is connected to the nasal cavity which moves food pieces into it where it divides and moves into the Esophagus. The esophagus tube connects the throat to the stomach where food pieces are moved through it. The stomach then acts as a storage tank for food pieces intake where it takes time to digest meals. The acids contained in the stomach help with digestion. The enzymes in the stomach help in digestion which began through the mouth. This digestive enzyme begins converting nutrients into carbohydrates for energy. This process also works with fluids to moisten food and ease digestion. Saliva is one of the fluids taking part in digestion to help swallow food easily into the throat after breaking the food pieces into smaller size. Another acid taking part in digestion is hydrochloric acid which begins to digest the food storage to deposit either in exit or in form of nutrients. The enzymes break molecules into components for the body to absorb for energy like lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates.
Digestion is a complex process involving multiple steps to fully dissolve food nutrients in the body and exit the waste product out. The three main processes involved for mixing and moving food consist of the swallowing process, travelling through the GI tract and segmentation. Swallowing process mixes the food with the saliva to push it into the GI tract. Segmentation occurs so as to absorb nutrients from foods.

The liver produces fluid known as bile to break fats and chemical digestion takes place with complex molecules broken. Also the pancreas produces fluid to dissolve lipids and carbohydrates. The small intestine plays its role for passing on the digested food into the large intestine. The absorbed food nutrients during this process are passed onto other parts of digestive system. Liver, gallbladder and pancreas play an active part for the digestive system to complete the digestion process. Followed by the pancreas to work is large intestine which is a thicker tube to absorb water and pass on feces to exit.
This process is for absorbing food into the bloodstream. The component nutrients from the food we intake get absorbed in the intestine walls. The digested food will find its way to remain in the bloodstream and leave the body as waste product. The small intestine and large intestine both take part in this process to carry food nutrients and complete the digestion process. Absorption takes place to fully extract the nutrients from the food we intake. The walls of intestines pick up food molecules to be broken down and then carry them to where they are needed. The large intestine absorbs some vital nutrients and vitamins required for the body to use for body nourishment. Feces are free of useful materials and are just a waste thrown out of the body as a waste. The digestive system works to get use of the food nutrients throwing off the waste material as feces.
This last step is the most important to analyze digestion is taking place properly. Most often it is the feces which tell about indigestion which is not so often to be taken seriously. Excretion is an extremely important step to take the waste material out from the body which brings the whole process of digestion to completion. This final function has to take place accordingly to avoid disturbances anywhere in the system.
The digestive hormones have significance all through the complex process as several factors affect the working of the organs involved. The combined working of all parts makes it to digest food properly leading to balanced metabolic functions. Even a single malfunction makes the body upset linked organs and disturb other organs. The various juices produced within the body help with digestion and are secreted as required by the body. Digestion is a destructive process as the food we intake is broken down into tiny molecules extracting the required nutrients to be absorbed into the body.
